    Event: Friday Night Stargazing: Museum of Science

    Description: Tucked away on the roof of the Museum's parking garage, the Gilliland Observatory is a wonderful resource for our starry-eyed public. Join us on the roof every Friday night from mid-April thru mid-October for a stellar presentation equipped with a computer-controlled, Celestron CGE 1100 Schmidt Cassegrain telescope and staffed by knowledgeable Museum employees.

    On clear nights, visit the Gilliland Observatory on the roof of the Museum's parking garage, where you can view stars, planets, the Moon, and other astronomical phenomena. During inclement weather or less ideal stargazing conditions, join us indoors to discuss astronomy and perform hands-on activities near the entrance to the parking garage on Level 2. Look for the clear glass doors and our friendly Observatory staff members.

    Astronomy After Hours runs seasonally, from the first Friday in March to the last Friday before Thanksgiving. Admission is free thanks to the generosity of the Lowell Institute (parking charges still apply).

    Description: Located in the Boston Harbor Shipyard and Marina in East Boston, the ICA Watershed transforms a 15,000-square-foot, formerly condemned space into a new civic and cultural asset. As you approach the space, just steps away from beautiful Piers Park, you'll find pieces of art here and there, including some cool profile faces of Blue Man Group, (photo op!) some creatively painted boats, a giant fish sculpture (look up!), murals on buildings, and a small sculpture garden.

    The ICA Watershed opens with Diana Thater, the first of many exhibitions in conversation with this unique and historical space on the waterfront. Thater’s installation for the ICA will illuminate the Watershed with colored light and moving-image projections that reflect on the fragility of the natural world.The Watershed will also feature a gallery dedicated to the rich history of the shipyard and East Boston more broadly, with an overview of the area’s development into the vibrant community it is today. Guests can also enjoy the Harbor Room, a space for gathering and education projects that leads to an outdoor plaza overlooking Boston Harbor and the skyline.

    Description: Rita Parisi of Waterfall Productions will be your hostess for an All Hallows Eve Tea in the newly renovated Natick History Museum. Rita, as the character of Mrs. Gordon, a lady from 1908, will discuss how people celebrated Halloween at the turn of the last century. Be chilled and thrilled as she recants some of her own uncanny experiences as well as her recent attendance of a séance!

    Rita Parisi has been entertaining audiences for over 20 years in the New England area. In 2002, she founded Waterfall Productions to create shows that highlight her passion for theatre as well as history, literature and costuming. She has had the pleasure of performing these shows all over New England. Rita is also actively involved in the independent film scene in Boston and some of her films have been debuted at the Boston International Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival. She is a proud member of the largest acting union in the country, SAG/AFTRA formerly the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

    Description: The Yarmouth Seaside Festival is scheduled for Columbus Day Weekend, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, October 6, 7, 8, 2018. The festival features a wide range of activities from sand sculpting to a road race.

    This year marks the 40th anniversary of the festival. The celebration also includes a fireworks display, a bonfire on the beach, carnival rides and games, a bed race and a canoe/kayak race. The craft fair features over 125 craft people from New England making ceramics, jewelry, and gift items. The craft fair opens on Saturday and Sunday at 10:00 am and closes each day at 5:00 pm.

    There will be activities for the entire family. Visitors will find food vendors, live music, children’s entertainment, rides, and games.

    Description: Celebrate National Fire Safety Month in our hands-on workshop where you and your child can build a model fireboat to put out shoreline or shipboard fires and transport emergency personnel and rescue workers. Once your firefighting vessel construction is complete, you and your hero can decorate it with paint and stickers and give it a name like the historically famous fireboats that precede your new firefighting craft. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last.     Description: The Department of Astronomy at Williams College will host free shows for the public. Audiences will be treated to shows from the high-precision Zeiss Skymaster ZKP3/B optomechanical planetarium projector, installed in 2005. Shows will last approximately 50 minutes.

    The Zeiss Skymaster is capable of demonstrating phenomena including retrograde motions of the planets, phases of the moon, the varying temperatures/colors of stars, locations of neighboring galaxies, the mythological figures and zodiacal signs ascribed to constellations, the Southern Hemisphere's sky, comets, artificial satellites, and much more. For ages 6 and up. Reservations required.

    Description: Join the happy circle with Kay Lyons at a lap-sit story hour for children age 3 and under (with a grown-up) at the Greenfield Public Library. Kay reads books, leads the group in hand rhymes, and uses puppets to teach animal sounds and other concepts new to the very young. Each session is 45 minutes, with half an hour of structured activity and about fifteen minutes of visiting time. No sign-up is required, and the program is free of charge thanks to the generosity of the Friends of Greenfield Public Library.

    Description: The annual Scarecrow in the Park event, a seasonal favorite, is sponsored by the Bernardston Kiwanis and is in its sixth year of being a two-day event, on October 20th and 21st. Proceeds from this event benefit the Bernardston Kiwanis Scholarship Fund. The scarecrows, artists and craftspeople, Tractor & Rag Shag Parade, two days of live music including a full concert-length set from local Favorite Appalachian Still, Halloween dance party, artist demonstrations, lots of family activities, delicious food options, and more, make this an event that is not to be missed.

    The Melha Shriners clowns will be paying us a visit again this year, sharing their face painting and balloon-sculpting talents. The artists’ booths will be open both days, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday, and 'til 3:00 pm on Sunday. Featuring jewelry, pottery, fiber arts, clothing, preserves, wood crafts, gourd art, handcrafted soap, seasonal decorations, home adornments, maple syrup, candles, and more, there really is something for everyone!
